About Ken Robinson presentation

I like so much the speech of Ken Robinson. I’m agree with his ideas about how the educational system (I think he is talking about public education in USA, but we can extrapolate her conclusions to our country) kills the creativity of kids.

In his analysis he noted a fact that I think is very important to understand why in the education systems around the world there are the same hierarchy of subjects (math and language on the top, then humanities and in the bottom the arts). He pointed out that the education systems were made to supply the needs of the industrialization. In this way, education systems were made under the model of the university to supply the need of qualified manpower for industries.

But we can think something similar in these days. In fact, “innovation” and “creativity” are widely used words in business terminology. And some authors tell us that the most important resource in the global economy is knowledge.  So, ¿why creativity and innovation are so important in our time?. I think is because economy demands it.

I’m not saying that creativity is not important. I’m try to point out that if we said “develop the creativity and innovation skills of our kids” we have to ask to ourselves for what?. This way, we will be able to think an educational system for people and not for the global market.
